Frequently Asked Questions
There are several reasons why an organization should get certified. For
one, many business sectors require it, either by the customer or a
regulatory body. Irrespective of who requires it, a certified management
system provides peace of mind to the customer through ongoing
independent assurance (i.e. external certification body). Having an
international standard in place is pivotal for effective and efficient
product/service management through process approach and risk-based
thinking. Consequently, a mature certified management system opens the
door for global customers thereby enhancing market share.
Cost of quality includes prevention cost, appraisal cost, and
internal/external failure cost. Sum of these three costs could be as high
as 30% (approximately 10% prevention, 30% appraisal, and 60%
internal/external failure) of sales in a poorly run organization. This
means that this organization is fighting fires all the time and not
proactive at all. For an ISO certified company with a mature
management system, the cost of quality could be as low as 3-5% of sales
(out of that it will be 60% prevention, 25% appraisal, and less than 10%
internal/external failure). The challenge lies in transforming from
reactionary to a proactive approach by focusing on prevention rather
than failures. Such a challenge can be overcome by designing and
implementing an effective and efficient management system based on
process approach and risk-based thinking, supported by relevant metrics
and aligned with organization’s strategic plan.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the ISO standard
requirements due to their continuous/ongoing involvement. - Freedom from any biases if led by an internal employee
leading to inefficiencies, project delays, and
mismanagement. - Consultant’s diversified industrial experience from other
business sectors can be brought into the ISO project. - Internal evaluation of system readiness for certification
conducted by the consultant can be more objective. - Consultant can be more effective in holding the external
registrar accountable for the requirements of ISO
standards. - Amount of management system documentation (policies,
procedures, and tools) required for certification could be
significantly reduced by the consultant’s expertise in
process approach and risk-based thinking thereby reducing
the overall burden on the management and workforce.
Quality Manager is the backbone of any quality management system
and must satisfy the following skillsets:
- Must understand the requirements of management system
standard (i.e. ISO 9001, etc) - Be totally familiar with the cost of quality
- Be strong in process-approach and risk-based thinking
- Must have in-depth knowledge in relevant KPIs and their
evaluation - Must know how to seek and sustain management commitment
and support - Must engage employees in day-to-day management system
- Should have access to strategic plan for aligning the
management system with it.
