introduction to iso 9001

ISO 9001 consultant sets requirements for designing and implementing a quality management system (QMS) for service and manufacturing business sectors. The standard revolves around the customer both at the front and back end. It uses the framework of process approach and risk-based thinking to plan, design, roll out, evaluate, analyze, and continually improve the QMS. For an ISO 9001 Lead Auditor Training-based QMS to be in sync with the organization’s long-term picture, it must be aligned with the organization’s strategic plan, driven by metrics (KPIs), and guided by quality objectives.

The success of an effective implementation of an ISO 9001-based quality management system (QMS) depends upon (1) solid and continued senior management commitment and support, (2) employee ownership through their engagement in developing relevant processes/procedures, (3) approving the developed policies/procedures against predefined criteria, (4) evaluating the effectiveness of implementation through employee quizzes and process/risk-based internal audits, and (5) finally, engaging senior management for their ownership of the recently developed QMS through management review.

The tangible benefits of an effective and efficient management system include customer loyalty, market share increase, compliance with regulatory requirements, and reduced cost of quality. The intangible benefits include, but are not limited to, business process improvements, team approach enhancement, and motivation for innovation and creativity.

JSA Inc.’s technical background combined with diversified hands-on work experience is a perfect match for assisting Toronto-based business sectors such as technology & digital industries, life sciences & biotech, construction & wholesale, food & beverage processing, and automotive & advanced manufacturing.

There are several reasons why an organization should get certified. For one, many
business sectors require it, either by the customer or a regulatory body. Irrespective
of who requires it, a certified quality management system provides peace of mind to
the customer through ongoing independent assurance (i.e. external certification
body). Having an international standard in place is pivotal for effective and efficient
product/service management through process approach and risk-based thinking.
Consequently, a mature certified quality management system opens the door for
global customers thereby enhancing market share.

Cost of quality includes prevention cost, appraisal cost, and internal/external failure
cost. Sum of these three costs could be as high as 30% (approximately 10%
prevention, 30% appraisal, and 60% internal/external failure) of sales in a poorly run
organization. This means that this organization is fighting fires all the time and not
proactive at all. For an ISO certified company with a mature management system,
the cost of quality could be as low as 3-5% of sales (out of that it will be 60%
prevention, 25% appraisal, and less than 10% internal/external failure). The
challenge lies in transforming from reactionary to a proactive approach by focusing
on prevention rather than failures. Such a challenge can be overcome by designing
and implementing an effective and efficient management system based on process
  • Manufacturing
    • Auto parts (tier 1/2/3)
    • Food & beverage
    • Electronics
  • Construction & engineering firms (EPC)
    • Professional services (consulting, logistics)
    • Healthcare suppliers & labs

Many municipal, provincial, and federal tenders in the GTA require ISO 9001 as
proof of quality. Large corporations (automotive OEMs, healthcare networks,
construction firms) often shortlist only ISO-certified suppliers.

The process is facilitated by the following:

  • Reporting a non-conformance (internal or external – customer initiated)
  • Conducting a root-cause analysis down to process-level
  • Developing corrective action based upon the process that triggered the
non-conformance (i.e. developing/revising an existing or new procedure)
  • Implementing a corrective action (i.e. executing the revised/new
    procedure)
  • Verifying the effectiveness through monitoring of KPIs
  • Accept if successful, otherwise continue the above process

According to the ISO Survey 2023 data:

  • Canada reported approximately 5,635 ISO 9001 certificates in 2023,
which reflects a 4% increase from the previous year.
  • The number of certified sites (locations covered by certificates) in Canada
stood at approximately 10,016, marking a 2% increase from the prior
    reporting period.
