ISO 45001 From 30,000 Foot level

ISO 45001:2018 standard should act as a strategic step for any organization to improve its business performance and lay the foundation for sustainable development.

The overall requirements of adopting ISO 45001 based OHSMS include the following:

  1. Provide a process to determine and manage OHS risks.
  2. Determine the applicable statutory and regulatory requirements related to workplace health & safety.
  3. Trigger the development of a strategic plan by identifying and focusing on relevant internal and external issues including the stakeholders.
  4. Require you to establish OHS management system drivers such as OHS policy and OHS objectives for the overall direction for your OHS management system.
  5. Help your organization achieve and sustain proactive workplace health & safety.
  6. Introduce a process approach concept to identify processes related to various functions/departments within your organization.
  7. Compliment the process approach concept with a risk-based thinking to design prevention within your processes and eliminate “firefighting”.
  8. Provide a comfort level to your stakeholders in terms of due diligence and liability.
  9. Require the top management to identify, understand, and deliver their due role within the management system i.e., intended outcomes of your OHS management system.
  10. Lay the framework for establishing and monitoring/measuring proactive and reactive health & safety related KPIs.
  11. Require the understanding of risk-based thinking to minimize prescriptive requirements for documented information but instead put the onus on your company to determine the required documented information based upon process identification and subsequent risk assessment.
  12. Require the top management to engage itself with the OHS management system through predefined inputs and clearly spelled out action plan with responsibilities and timelines.
  13. Wrap up the overall OHS management process to drive continual improvement through a set of drivers.
